Google Accused of Disabling Key Nest Features

Google and its parent company, Alphabet, are facing a proposed class action alleging they failed to disclose that the core functionality of first- and second-generation Nest Learning Thermostats could be reduced or eliminated through software changes. The lawsuit claims Google later removed software updates and remote connectivity, leaving once “smart” devices with significantly reduced functionality before the end of their expected lifespan.

According to the complaint, consumers purchased Nest Learning Thermostats with the expectation that features like Wi-Fi connectivity, smartphone controls, and other smart capabilities would continue to function. Instead, the lawsuit alleges Google discontinued software support in October 2025, preventing many users from accessing remote controls, software updates, and other key features while the hardware itself remained operational. Plaintiffs argue they would not have purchased the devices, or would have paid substantially less, had they known Google could remove these core functions at its discretion.
