Meta has been hit with a proposed class action alleging that it rendered its Portal smart devices largely obsolete after removing key software features and applications. Consumers claim the company marketed Portal devices as multifunctional products for video calls, streaming, voice commands, and other services, but later discontinued many of those capabilities while the hardware was still usable. The lawsuit alleges that buyers would not have purchased the devices, or would have paid less, had they known Meta could later withdraw software support and significantly reduce the products’ functionality.
How Consumers Were Impacted
According to the complaint, Meta removed many first-party and third-party applications, including Zoom, Alexa, Microsoft Teams, Spotify, and Facebook Live, leaving many Portal devices significantly less functional despite still being physically usable. Plaintiffs argue that consumers lost the benefit of the products they purchased and were not adequately informed that key features could later be discontinued. The lawsuit seeks restitution, refunds, damages, and other relief on behalf of consumers who purchased Meta Portal devices.
